Wrap up the little wrigglers!

Are you a new parent looking to develop fine swaddling skills? We'd love to share some of our top tips and a little guide for getting the bub cosy and snug.

What is Swaddling?
Apart from being fun to say, swaddling is a technique practiced by parents for generations. It's the art of snugly wrapping your baby in a blanket or swaddle cloth. The method works to keep babies warm, safe, and ready for sleep.

Why do we Swaddle?
A swaddled baby is kept warm and is comforted by the snug fit - reminded of the womb! Swaddling also prevents babies from waking from normal startle reflex actions (Moro reflex). Having their arms snuggly secure also prevents them from unintentionally scratching themselves with their fingernails.

When NOT to Swaddle?
Once your baby has learned to roll over, it's time to stop swaddling. It's dangerous to continue beyond, as bubs could potentially have breathing difficulties if swaddled. It is also good to avoid swaddling when: co-sleeping, in hot temperatures, and if your baby is a high SIDS risk infant.

Step 1

Fold the swaddle into a diamond shape, and place baby on back in the center with shoulders just below the fold.

Step 2

Place baby’s right arm alongside the body, slightly bent. Take the same side of the swaddle and pull it securely across baby’s arm and chest, tucking the fabric under the baby. Leave the left arm free.

Step 3

Fold the bottom of the swaddle up and over baby’s feet. Tuck the point of the fabric into the top of the swaddle.

Step 4

Place baby’s left arm alongside the body, slightly bent. Take the remaining swaddle, and wrap it over baby’s arm and chest, tucking the fabric under baby to secure the swaddle.
